Welcome to Lon Matero's Apogee Page, featuring the classic games of the greatest shareware publisher of all time, Apogee Software.  The company was started in 1987 and since has published or developed over 30 computer games.

I will be featuring one Apogee game every once in a while.  Each feature will include an overview of the game, credits, system requirements, some strategies, characters, items, weapons, level overviews, and more!

This site is not affiliated with Apogee Software or 3D Realms Entertainment.

Prey

Lon's Prey Page is back! An exhustive history of the development and archive of news, videos, and previews.

Read on....

What's New?
October 21, 2006 Well, Prey's online delivery service has gone out of business 2.5 months after the game was released. And it seems that everyone else has been getting on board Steam lately. Luckily, Apogee is taking matters into their own hands with Mist!

July 29 , 2006 The reviews have come in on Prey and GameRankings.com gives the game an average of 83%. Another interesting development is Valve's Half-Life 2: Episode Two will contain a gun capable of producing dynamic portals. Funny thing is, there's a video showing that Prey did just this in 1998, although you dropped "mines" instead.

July 11 , 2006 Shipping!

June 28, 2006 Gooooooooooooooold!

June 27, 2006 The Apogee Legacy interview series is now complete. Wondering what Lee Jackson has been doing in the past few years? We now have answers in the last installment.

June 23, 2006 The Prey demo is out! There have been positive reactions on the amount of content given away plus the timing of the demo release, which is weeks before the retail date. There have been a few annoyances such as no proper widescreen support, but overall the game runs well and is good fun!

May 29, 2006 An interesting interview with Scott Miller is online. He mentions that Duke Nukem 3D's budget was $350,000 and Duke Nukem Forever has cost $7.5 million so far. That seems surprisingly low for a game in development that long, especially compared to Half-Life 2's $40 million, although 3D Realms does have a relatively small team.

Update on freeware games: As of now, Apogee has released a total of 11 of their games as freeware, which is about a quarter of their entire catalog. Congratulations on beating the abandonware trend and thanks Joe for pushing to get it done!

May 19, 2006 E3 is over and Prey was mostly overshadowed by many other next gen games. However the flood of Prey information, videos, and interviews is upon us. For the first time in a long time, a demo of a game, Prey, will be released before the retail date. This is a good move since the public can start testing it out on their hardware early. The Prey demo will be released about the time the game goes gold on June 22, 2006. BluesNews points out that this date is exactly 10 years past the date of the Quake Shareware release. An ominous date for this supposed "Quake-Killer!"

April 18, 2006 The Apogee Legacy interviews have been continuing with 15 parts to the series so far. Some interesting things have come to light, such as a unfinished 3D RPG, and Cybertank 3-D. You can tell Scott Miller came up with the questions in this survey for past developers, including questions on IP, distribution, and managment.

The latest Prey release date appears to be July 10th. I expect the game to be playable on the floor of E3 this year. The Prey Weekly Updates continue every single week. I especally like the change logs they are posting. The trip out to Art Bell's house in Neveda is also a highlight.

January 13, 2006  Today we have seen the first (weekly) Prey Development Update since 1998 along with the unveiling of the official Prey website. Maybe this game will actually be released this year?! Perhaps June?

December 27, 2005  Unbelievable, another Apogee game released as freeware. This time it is 1993's Bio Menace. I'd have to say, freeware is much better than abandonware!

November 23, 2005  New Prey trailer.

October 25, 2005  Shock! Official patches for Crystal Caves (1991) and Secret Agent (1992) have been released! Not too often you see the original programmers working with the rest of the community to create an official patch, as opposed to an unofficial work around, especially for games this old.

A new version of JonoF's Win32 port of Shadow Warrior is now available. You can try using this customized version of the Wanton Destruction expansion pack with it.

September 15, 2005  The expansion pack of legend for Shadow Warrior has surfaced after many years -- Wanton Destruction, from Sunstorm Interactive. This pack was never sold, but not it has been released as freeware. JonoF's port of Shadow Warrior is not compatible with this yet, but hopefully it will be fixed soon. Keep an eye on this thread. Also of note, there is already a walkthrough available for the 12 levels.

July 23, 2005  Boppin' (Accursed Toys, 1994) is now available for Windows (and it is free!)

June 23, 2005  Stargunner has made the jump from shareware to freeware! Thanks to the guys at Apogee for legally giving the full game for free. This is pretty big, since everything else released as freeware was pretty much text adventures from 1990 and before. Now remember, the game works best with DosBox.

May 22, 2005  Prey made a relatively small appearance at E3 this year. No large booth or gimmicks, but just a small TV on the wall running a one minute looping demo. However, behind closed doors, a 12 minute game play demo was shown! You can watch it for yourself, or read what others have said about it:

It was also announced that Game xStream will be distributing Prey online in a Steam like service, in addition to 2KGames handling store sales. No big surprise here, since Scott Miller is on DiStream's advisory board.

It seems George Broussard has officially restarted the hype machine up with,"Help spread the word on Prey!" Honestly, that makes me want to talk about it less now.

April 20, 2005 Ever wonder what Remedy has been up to? All indications show they are moving on from MAX PAYNE to heading to ALAN WAKE. It'll be something new, alright. Oh, and those PC Gamer mags are starting to make their way out from the publisher...

April 18, 2005 After an April Fools hint and a 1000+ post thread on speculations, it now seems Prey is a little more official. A PC Gamer preview and E3 showing are the next events.

April 2, 2005 Just as predicted, the Shadow Warrior source code is now available! Charlie Wiederhold was in charge of organizing the game code, so thanks Charile! I'm hoping we will see a DoomsDay style port where the same codebase and features can be shared across Duke3D, Shadow Warrior, and other Build games. But, what do you know, less than 24 hours after the release, we have a native Win32 port available, called JFSW from JonoF of JFDuke3D fame. The port runs excellent in 1280x1024.

March 8, 2005 My site had to be moved to a slightly new location since one of my accounts was deleted, along with my primary e-mail address. The url www.apogeegames.com should take you here. And lon (at) matero (dot) net should work for e-mail.

Some news? Well, more like rumors. It appears the Shadow Warrior source code will finally be made public; perhaps on April 1st for the 2-year anniversary of the Duke3D source code release.

Some more signs of active Prey development. Why else would 3D Realms pay up to $850,000 to buy the "prey.com" domain in the last year?

Finally, the WinROTT port has been steadily improving. I successfully played some LAN games for the first time in a long time. I removed the copies of my compiled ROTT binaries.

May 28, 2004 More Apogee games have been released as freeware! The Adventure and Puzzle Fun-Paks are now available for download. This includes a total of eight early Scott Miller games. A warning though, the graphics consist of only ASCII characters and you will need a slow down ultility or DOSBox (Use CTRL-F11 to slow down emulation).

March 28, 2004 Here's some nice news. Flight of the Amazon Queen, an adventure game from the creators of Halloween Harry/Alien Carnage, has been released as freeware. Give it a try, it's a high quality product for 1994. The game and the required ScummVM can be downloaded here.

In other news, Charile Wiederhold released some Shadow Warrior maps from the canceled Wanton Destruction expansion pack. Check them out!

January 24, 2004 Prey History has been updated again with some new evidence that Prey may be re-announced soon.

November 25, 2003 Looks like Scott Miller has started up a Blog on the gaming industry. I'm sure there will be many interesting future entries.

September 13, 2003 Updated the Prey History a bit more. I got one suggestion to do a similar article for Duke Nukem Forever, hmm. From Dave, a suggestion for a new alternative to Mo'Slo called CPULower.  Ken Silverman has finally released a demo of his new engine.

September 10, 2003 Finally, for those of you who curious about this Prey game, I have pretty much everything ever released for it online now. Special thanks to Bradley Ouimette, who re-encoded some rare interviews.

April 1, 2003   Duke Nukem 3D Source Code Released!

This is actually for real. I suppose the response was good from the ROTT source release, so 3D Realms did it again and released the Duke3D source code(3.83MB). Now, the icculus guys already have the Build engine ported to Linux and other platforms, and they're just been waiting for some game source, so expect some ports soon. Remember ROTT was working in Linux in less than 48 hours.[update] Check out the bottom of GAME.C for some easter eggs. Thanks, 3D Realms, for the source!

Feburary 2, 2003  I can't say enough about icculus.org's port of ROTT. They did a timely and well done job port to many platforms. Now gamers can play ROTT just about anywhere. Also, I think icculus.org's 1.0 is the definitive starting point for any other modifications or improvements developers will want to make to the Rise of the Triad.

December 21, 2002  I have successfully compiled a rott.exe, and have added information on how to do this in a new section.

December 20, 2002  ROTT Source Code Released!

Unbelievable! We thought the code was lost. Then we thought they would never do it. But now the Rise of the Triad source code is GPL'd and ready for action. After years of asking and waiting, the time is here. This news has even made Slashdot and, yes, 3DRealms.com is slashdotted for the first time in a long while.Watcom 10.0 is required to build the .exe, but work is starting right away to port ROTT to Win32.

September 23, 2002 Sorry for the lack of updates, I guess I've been caught up playing too many non-Apogee games lately :) I did update the compatibility list to reflect WinXP SP1 and a newer version of VDMSound. There are now only three games that I can't get working at all, so something must have been improved. Even Stargunner started working in Windows, even though it was discontinued this summer. Links page is also updated, including one on editing the old Duke Nukem and Cosmo games. Still more; the beta page is updated with an early pinball demo from Wildfire.Ken Silverman just released a patch to use with BUILD engine games such as SW and Duke3D to allow VESA 2.0 modes to work in 2000/XP. I didn't have too much luck with it, however. Ken's page also has news of a new OpenGL/SDL port of Ken's Lab. Oh, and don't miss this great interview with Scott Miller.I still need to finish up my new Prey article, but I still don't have all of the videos; oh well, suppose I can post everything I have anyways.

April 21, 2002 Edward Windsor-Halloran writes in and says that the Hercules Muse XP soundcard works 100% with DOS games for SB Emulation.  He also adds "setaudio.com" is needed for MIDI to work.WineX 2.0 has been released for Linux and now fully supports Max Payne and other DirectX 8 based games.  Wine is sort of a replacement for the Windows API and allows Win32 apps and games to run under a Linux environment.  With this news I'm considering moving over to Linux myself :)A Pharaohs Tomb editor is available for download, along with some extra levels.  Nice hack! Also a new interview with Ken Silverman. I should also add that a lot of hype around for Duke Nukem: Manhattan Project now.  Should be out any week now, and from the looks of it, seems to have some hints of old Apogee sidescrollers in it.

April 2, 2002 A few new things.  On the beta page, I added a new game: Projectile Warrior!  Copyright violations included :)  You can now download the full version of Trek Trivia, as opposed to just the shareware before.Oh, and some Prey news!  From Evil Avatar, there's a rumor that Human Head Studios is developing the game using the Doom [3] engine. Well, I have to say that anything's possible.  Also notice that no one at 3D Realms has denied the rumor.  I guess some more stuff to add to my Prey page.

March 1, 2002 Working on that Prey stuff again. I should have something online soon.  Apogee Central has been added to the links.  In other news, Ken Silverman has updated his Voxlap engine page with lots of new screenshots and information.  If you haven't seen it yet, look at the Keen story from a fan.  Just a huge amount of fan art in there and appearances by many other Apogee characters! No news on that possible source code release.  Not sure if they have changed their minds or what.  Note, my email address has changed to lcmatero@oakland.edu, since @Home is gone.

December 31, 2001 Update:  Inside sources say the surprise may be source code.  If it's true, it will be the first time in Apogee's 13 year history that any source code has been made public.  Also, Joe Siegler said the release is going to be delayed a few days.I've started work on some Prey stuff, should be pretty neat.  Be sure to check out these interviews with Ken Silverman and Todd Replogle, something you don't see everyday.  Also, on the Apogee website, there is supposed to be a surprise released around today that is "of interest to old timers".  I don't know, I'm not going to put up high expectations.

November 4, 2001 Modified Arctic Adventure and Mystic Towers as now working in the compatibility list (No more Runtime 200 Errors) with the new .exe files I made. Also, I'm planning on returning all Prey media online, but I've seemed to have lost most of the Prey videos.  Anyone run across a FTP server or something that has them?September 1, 2001Have a new compatibility test online.  I also put up my Duke Nukem Hangman game on the beta page.   I'm back to serving this site on Oakland University; no worries about advertisements, bandwidth used, or anything here. The domain apogeegames.com should be working on forwarding the site here too. Looks like Boppin' is the latest game to be discontinued off of Apogee's product line, thanks Dilip Rajan.Anyone remember Lon's Prey Page?  Hopefully, I'll have a redone site with all the Prey stuff soon.

August 2, 2001

Frenkel Smeijers let me know about some new programs he made.  The first one is called Textract, which is short for Todd Replogle Extractor.  This will extract data like graphics and sound out of Cosmo, Duke Nukem II, and Major Stryker.  The second program is called Sndplay, which plays the PC speaker sound effects from Keen 1, Duke Nukem 1, Cosmo, Major Stryker, and a bunch of id software titles. Frenkel is kind enough to include the source code too!  Check out his website for more utilities like these for old Softdisk, id, and Apogee games.

July 25, 2001Remedy's second game, Max Payne, is finished and in stores.  It has been four years, nine months since their last release, Death Rally.  One thing different about this release is the lack of shareware.  Usually, the shareware episode is released a couple months before the full version, but this time the shareware release will come about a month afterward.  Too bad, because I've viewed the shareware as almost a large public beta test, where any compatibility problems will get sorted out before anyone starts paying for anything.  Also, the only way for gamers to try before they buy is to download a warez copy now.  But the industry has changed, and 3D Realms isn't much the shareware company they were in the past. Some information on the copy protection features of Max Payne is coming in.  No CD Keys with the game, but Safedisc 2 is configured not to allow any copies to be made.  Also, the CD must be in the drive, even for the full install.  This should stop much of the casual copying, since only a handful of CD Burners can copy Safedisc 2 protected discs. With the release of Max Payne 1.0, Apogee's UBB has been overloaded and has been taken down.  This is unfortunate for customers that just bought the game and are having trouble with it.  I can't really recommend any other forum to ask questions since GOD and Remedy both point to 3D Realms' servers.  On the other hand, this is just a temporary problem and should be cleared up soon.Anyways, go out and grab Max Payne! I heard all the retail boxes have a mouse pad, and a bonus CD with Duke 3D Atomic Edition plus the E3 movies.

July 5, 2001  Apogee returns to Fidonet! Some of you may remember the Fidonet BBS Echo message board used heavily in the early 90's.  Joe Siegler was the moderator back then, but it finally died off a few years ago.  Well, Bryan Tuner in Apogee's tech support has started the echo again.  Although not much traffic there, a few of the old Apogee crew has some old stories and ASCII art.  If you want to check it out, either log into your local BBS or use The Litter Box.  Click on Join/Browse, then click on FIDO.Apogee.Ken Silverman has released the source code to Ken's Labyrinth 3D from 1993.  It is pretty neat to see his coding style that he describes as tightly packed and no commenting.I mentioned that WinXP now has support for sound in DOS games.  I tried it out in Beta 2 and it is not that great.  It only works on a handful of games, and the ones they do work on, it is not perfect. The Commander Keen game for the GameBoy Color is out now.

April 29, 2001  Balls of Steel and Devils Island patches have been released.  This brings BOS up to 1.3 and Devils Island up to 1.1.  The largest fix in these new versions is these games now work fine under Windows 2000! Some good news for DOS games and Windows XP.  The latest beta of the OS has support for Sound Blaster sound in DOS games and VESA support (S-VGA resolutions).  For more information, try Paul Thurrott's article 3D Portal, a network about 3D Realms games among other things, is closing down at the end of the month. Like many other gaming sites out there, the advertising and run out and they cannot keep the servers online.  Brad Wernicke founded the web site in 1996 that turned into DukeWorld and started sites on other 3D Realms games later.  Adding to the bad news, most of the hosted sites were lost in a hard drive crash a few weeks ago.  Sites like EDuke are showing last updated in September, 2000;  that's when the last backup of the hosted pages were made.  Hopefully, all of the content on the 3D Portal sites will find a home somewhere else in the future.Noticed Ken Silverman has a new plugin for Winamp that plays his sound file formats. Don't forget to look at his new Vortex engine and Kube screenshot technology if you're wondering what he has been doing lately. Some new Jumpman links:  The Epyx Shrine, The Jumpman Project, Official Jumpman 2.New Wolfenstein links: Seems like a lot has been happening with the Wolf3D source code lately.  Wolf 3D news, Wolf3D Fan Club, WolfDX Source PortNewWolf Source Port.

December 16, 2000 - Lots of updates and news:   Apogee has finally ditched their publisher and is now completely with GOD Games/Take2 Interactive.  As some may know, Apogee has always sold games direct, but also used FormGen for the retail channels.  FormGen was bought out by GT Interactive, and GT was bought out by Infogrames. Gathering of Developers, which already publishes Max Payne, now takes ownership of the Duke Nukem series (probably also the Talon Brave series). Take2 Interactive holds a 19.9% equity interest in GOD.  In summary,  DNF goes to GOD, the console games go to Take2's Rockstar Games, and the Game Boy Duke goes to Take2's Game Boy Color division.  Check out the Press Release for more on this situation. Davis Sickmon sent in some interesting info for you Jumpman fans out there.  A new company called MidnightRyder is producing a brand new game called Jumpman: 2049.  But not just any Jumpman game, this is authorized by the original author, Randy Glover.  In addition, Randy Glover is working on "Jumpman II" himself!  Check out their website for lots of information and updates from the team and Randy Glover himself. Joe Siegler has written the "ROTT in Hell" of Keen articles.  It is the 10th Anniversary of the first Commander Keen game from id and Apogee Software.  This article includes quite a bit of behind the scenes information plus recent developments with the series.  It is well worth the read. Admiral Bob has finished his Duke Nukem 1 level editor, called DN1Mod!  Check out this thread on the Apogee UBB for more info.  There has been primitive level editor available for Duke Nukem, but this is the first with a full GUI plus full SOURCE CODE!  It has been released under the GNU Public License and was written in Pascal.

October 24, 2000 - Joe Siegler let me know that for a limited time, anyone who buys ROTT direct will receive the Site License version.  So if anyone has been looking for the Site License (11 Computers), this is your chance!

October 3, 2000 - Khaine has sent in a pack of ROTT deathmatch levels.

September 25, 2000 - I noticed this update on Apogee's website: Bio Menace discontinued - all relevant pages updated/removed.  Bio Menace remains a copyrighted program - it is not legal to download it from anywhere.  Period. I don't see why Bio Menace had to be discontinued.  It works fine on my 945Mhz in Windows 2000--sound and all.  Perhaps it was discontinued because the game does not run under WinMe.  Check my Compatibility Test for more information.

September 6, 2000 - Khaine has also sent in a level for ROTT.  He has recreated E1L1, "Hollywood Holocaust" from Duke3D in Rise of the Triad; complete with a moving curtain for the theater!

September 5, 2000 - Thanks to Khaine, I have added most of the Big Blue Disks for download to the Softdisk feature.  These zips were pulled direct from the original disks and they contain lots of goodies.Dilip Rajan has sent me an unofficial patch for WinMe that adds DOS Mode to the OS.  In other words, you can bypass the booting to Windows and go straight to DOS for Apogee gaming goodness!

September 2, 2000 - Out of nowhere yesterday, ROTT Extreme was released as freeware!  A few years ago this level pack was discontinued but now the official addon for ROTT is free to all who have the game.  Note, ROTT v1.3 Registered is required for this download.  This adds 42 levels to the game, but the other extras on the CD were not released.  So Apogee has released everything for ROTT as of now; well, except for the source code.

August 10, 2000 - After a little break, Khaine has resumed his level releases with a new pack.  Only 83 more to go!

July 11, 2000 - They keep rolling in; Jumpman Lives! Level pack #16 is online.

July 5, 2000 - Khaine is back with another level pack for Jumpman Lives!

July 1, 2000 - A new feature article is online about Apogee's contributions to Softdisk's "Big Blue Disks" over the years.

June 21, 2000 - Looks like Apogee is being brought up again in another discussion at PlanetCrap.  The Intellectual Property Rights agreement is still getting questioned.

June 21, 2000 - Holy moly, Ken Silverman has released the BUILD Engine source code to the public.  This is the mother load, filled with Ken's own demo game, all sources to utilities, and good documentation (including explanations of the .art and .map formats).  This is probably the closest we will see to the Duke3D or Shadow Warrior source code.  This opens many more possibilities for the Build games now.

June 20, 2000 - Jumpman Level Pack #14 is here -- make sure you checkout Dopefish!

June 13, 2000 - Level Pack #13 is online for Jumpman.

June 6, 2000 - Level Pack #12 is online. This means Khaine has released 120 addon levels for Jumpman so far!

June 3, 2000 - Here is Khaine's 11th Jumpman Level Pack.  This one includes a "X-Rated" level.

June 1, 2000 - Apogee(r) is getting a lot of attention over a new policy that went online a few weeks ago.  Apparently some people think this agreement allows Apogee to stop negative reviews, but this is not true; it only applies to fan sites. Threads have appeared on Slashdot and Scary's Shugashack about this topic carrying hundreds of posts. Scott Miller responded with this post. I noticed the link to the policy (Under the About section) has been removed on Apogee's web site.  I'm surprised I haven't received a letter from Apogee's lawyers, as I probably have more than a few violations of the policy on this fan site. :)  Scott Miller assumes all fan sites have lawyers too; oops!May 27, 2000 - Level Pack #10 from Khaine has been released!

May 26, 2000 - Looks like Apogee's lone female employee Colleen Compton is no longer with the company.  Interesting how only non-developers are listed on the Site Revision history when this happens.  Update:  It appears the update about Colleen Compton has also been removed.

May 23, 2000 - Some new links:  Classic Gaming, a pretty empty Apogee fan site with a message board. The Halloween Harry Webshrine, all the goods on the Halloween series. Also, Khaine's Level Pack #9 for Jumpman is online!

May 16, 2000 - Continuing the trend, the 8th level pack for has been released for all the Jumpman fans out there.

May 13, 2000 - The 7th level pack for Jumpman Lives! from Khaine is released.  This one includes some really challenging levels for those experts out there, including "Juggernaut."

May 6, 2000 - New feature!  Take a look at the compatibility list with Windows Me and Windows 2000.

May 5, 2000 - Khaine's 6th Jumpman level pack.

May 1, 2000 - The Jumpman levels keep rolling in from Khaine. Today he releases his 5th in the series.

May 1, 2000 - E-Commerce has come to Apogee Software--finally! store.yahoo.com/3drealms has officially opened today for business.  The full Apogee catalog can be ordered and some can be downloaded.  Also, non software like shirts and other collectables can be purchased online. I'm sure glad to see the convenience of e-commerce here.In other news, Ken Silverman has made patches available for versions of Duke 3D and Shadow Warrior that fix the game crash problem with the Sound Blaster Live. Grab them at his homepage.

April 26, 2000 - Some more Jumpman levels coming in from Shaun.  Also check out his Jumpman page.

April 26, 2000 - The 4th Jumpman Level Pack from Khaine can now be downloaded.

April 22, 2000 - Well, here I am at a new server. Luckily, I had the @Home service installed yesterday and it comes with web space.  After four years with the website at Oakland University, I was finally forced to move.I noticed on Apogee's Pricing page that Alien Carnage is now discontinued.  This is probably due that it needs Mo'Slo in order to run on faster computers

.April 21, 2000 - Some bad news. I found out my account at Oakland University will be deleted on May 5, 2000.  That includes my web directory and my e-mail address, so I'm going to have to move my web sites very soon.  Watch for a link soon.In other news, here is Khaine's Third pack of levels for Jumpman Lives, another 10 levels for your enjoyment.

April 15, 2000 - The second Khaine pack has been released for Jumpman Lives!; this one even includes a level titled "Duke Nukem Forever."

April 11, 2000 - The first of ten level packs for Jumpman Lives! has been released by Khaine.  Simply download and unzip into your Jumpman directory.  This pack includes the first ten of possibly 1000 user levels for the game. Crazy!  Khaine also mentions he will eventually open a website at jumpmanlives.com.

March 4, 2000 - Make sure you check out the newly redesigned official Apogee website!  Big changes include the full Apogee Tech Support Knowledgebase online. If you have a problem with a game, it is now possible to look at the same resources Apogee Tech Support uses.  Another change for the better is the pricelist.  Most Apogee games have been lowered to $10 or $15 each.  This is a relief for many who would not pay the sometimes insane prices for games a decade old.  And as a predicted, E-Commerce will be coming to Apogee Software.  I'm really looking forward to this feature, and I'm sure it will increase their sales.  Overall, great job, Joe!

February 11, 2000 - Quite a bit of news I've gathered, but haven't posed yet:

October 30, 1999 - Here is a treat for Rise of the Triad fans: Apogee has released six ROTT levels unseen until now.  These levels were originally from a Deluxe Shareware version, but they work with both the current shareware and registered versions.  Thanks goes out to Joe Siegler for getting these levels to the public.

October 20, 1999 - A new version of Sam Stoddard's Official Apogee FAQ has been posted, yippy! Version 6.4 is a minor revision with updates on BOS and new console games, among other things.

September 23, 1999 - Apogee has posted a fix for the 64MB Install problem for Registered Xenophage users.  In other news, Joe Siegler has scanned in some interesting artwork and put it on the 3DR Message Boards.  There is a Boppin manual picture and rare retail box artwork of Balls of Steel.

August 29, 1999 - New featured game, Xenophage: Alien Bloodsport!

August 23, 1999 - Some more bad news. According to the Adrenaline Vault, Wildfire Studios is breaking up. Here is the report:

The Adrenaline Vault has learned that Australian-based Wildfire Studios, creators of the arcade pinball offering, Balls of Steel, is closing its doors. The developers will finish the add-on table for the game, titled Devils Island, but will then be going their separate ways. The talented team came close to landing a publishing deal for another pinball title and had hoped to develop a 3D RPG, but, according to Wildfires Joel Finch, the industry climate at the moment is not supportive of the pinball genre and deals for the RPG title never came to fruition. The Devils Island table will be released soon.

Also, there will be a new feature game soon.

August 18, 1999 - Some bad news. According to the official price list, Apogee's first game, Kroz, has been discontinued. It was updated August 5th with this information and it is unknown why the game has been discontinued.  You will no longer be able to buy the registered Kroz through Apogee, but the shareware version is still around to play. In other news, Joe Siegler pointed out to me a new (!!) review of Apogee's Math Rescue game, which may be found interesting.

April 15, 1999 - Apogee/Pinball Wizards released a patch for Balls of Steel bringing the game up to v1.2.  Wow, strange seeing an official file release from the company after such a long drought. Also interesting to see Pinball Wizards cut the contract on World Scores. Sounds like Scott Miller may not be too interested in supporting the Pinball market anymore.

February  21, 1999 - A new feature, this time one of Apogee's "lost games," Jumpman Lives!

January 21, 1999 - Here is something pretty neat: David Joffe has created a Duke Nukem I "clone" in Linux called Dave Gnukem. The page on the game has a screenshot of the game and the level editor plus you can download a beta version if you run Linux.  Too bad there isn't a DOS version at this time, this game looks pretty interesting.

January 15, 1999 - Some pretty big news here.  Remember Halloween Harry from Apogee's Alien Carnage? It looks like there may be a cartoon starring Halloween coming to a TV near you! Zombie Wars: The Animated Series is being advertised on Gee Whiz's website and they have posted a draft script to the first episode plus pictures of all the characters in the series.  I would really like to see this cartoon happen; seeing an Apogee character on TV would be great!

December 30, 1998 - Something new with Apogee's Pinball Wizards Division.  Wildfire, the developers of Balls of Steel, is creating an add-on using the table Devil's Island.  Their page says they may go directly to online realtors, but there is a chance Pinball Wizards will publish the game.

November 28, 1998 - New featured game is online, Mystic Towers. Check it out!

September 12, 1998 - Been a while, but the next feature is posted.  I'm featuring two games this time: Trek Trivia and TNG Trivia, both Star Trek games. And for the first time in years, these games are available for download!  There is also a new Apogee fan page online, check it out.

July 31, 1998 - Thanks a lot to a few people for sending me a few of the rare Apogee games from the 80's.  I'll be sure to feature them soon and make the shareware available to anyone once again. In other news, it seems that someone else has created a fake beta of an Apogee game other than me.  I saw on Spoofed a v0.3 of "Duke Nukem Forawhile". A pretty neat game that is mostly text, but has some graphics in it.  I'll add it to the Beta Page soon.

July 24, 1998 - A new featured game, Pharaoh's Tomb!  Thanks to Doug Howell for helping me get some of the older games running on a Pentium.  Mo'Slo does the job!

July 13, 1998 - A few items to update you with.  The Apogee Temple, a relatively new site, is online and hosted by 3D Portal. It's a pretty good site that covers a few of Apogee's games. For the next featured game, I was going to cover an older game like Monuments of Mars or Pharaohs Tomb, but it doesn't look like they run on my computer.  They either don't like Pentiums or Windows95/98.  I'll probably have to load them on a 486.

July 3, 1998 - Bringin' it back!  Here is my redesigned page with a new look and new focus.  You won't see any news here, since there isn't much going on with the classic Apogee games these days. But, if you are a fan of the old games, this is the page for you!  From what I understand, there will be another Apogee page like this going online in the future by someone else.  See? I'm not the only one doing this! :) I think its appropriate to start off with a feature of Cosmo's Cosmic Adventure, and I'll add more featured games soon.  I hope you like the new site devoted to only the classic games.

Looking for my old news?
